PAPA ROACH Frontman On His Recovery From Vocal Cord Surgery: It Was 'Terrifying'

PAPA ROACH singer Jacoby Shaddix spoke to the 93.3 WMMR radio station about his recovery from the vocal cord surgery he underwent last summer.

"I feel good, man," he said (hear audio below). 'My voice shows up every night. I'm taking care of myself — drinking lots of water and getting rest and doing all the right things. So it feels good. I sing hard rock music, I go off every night — I'm on 10 — and so sometimes that wear and tear beats me down. But right now, I feel great."

PAPA ROACH canceled several shows last August so that Shaddix could recover his vocal cords in time to resume band's tour in support of 2017's "Crooked Teeth" album.

"In the recovery process, you don't speak," Jacoby explained. "I didn't speak for two weeks before the surgery, 'cause I tried to get the swelling to go down. And then it didn't go down, so I had to get surgery, so then it was like three more weeks of no speaking. So that was intense. But in the recovery process, you try everything to avoid heartburn. So I cut out coffee for a couple of months, tomatoes — all those things that gave me heartburn. And so now it's just a matter of just living more of a disciplined life as far as the food I eat. And I don't drink alcohol no more, so that's not an issue to me. So I'm just taking care of myself."

Shaddix went on to describe the recovery process as "terrifying, because you just don't know if your voice is gonna show up again. But luckily, I had one of the best surgeons in the business — she did Steven Tyler's surgery, she did Adele's surgery, Meghan Trainor's surgery… A lot of the pop people, they've been through that," he said. "And I have a vocal coach that helped recover all those vocalists back to their full potential and better. So I've learned a lot about myself and my emotions, but then also a lot about my voice and the importance of being able to live a life to support my career."

"Crooked Teeth" was released in May 2017 via Eleven Seven Music. The disc was written and recorded in a cramped North Hollywood studio with producers Nicholas "RAS" Furlong and Colin Brittain, with the exception of "Born For Greatness", which saw the band collaborate with writer/producer Jason Evigan (Jason Derulo, Demi Lovato, Zedd, MAROON 5).
